Background

The project was elaborated with two different groups of young boys of foreign origin, guests of a reception center in Terni and Rieti, not far from Rome. Both groups expressed a strong interest in soccer, and so it was planned together with them to organize a tournament with other local teams that would focus on human rights and combating gender and honor violence. A total of 7 different teams were involved. T-shirts with the name of the team and the right/value represented were made for each team, for which a speech was prepared before the game.

What Happened

A kick to discrimination and a goal for rights! On December 20, “In gioco per i diritti,” a 7-a-side soccer tournament with 8 mixed teams, was held in Narni (Italy). The initiative was held by the beneficiaries of reception center for young asylum seekers and migrants of the municipalities of Terni, Narni and Rieti, together with youngsters from the youth center “La Stanzetta” in Narni.

The tournament aimed to celebrate human rights, transcending all forms of competition. Each team was named after a right or value chosen by the players themselves, such as: solidarity, brotherhood, gender equality, right to work, respect.

With a view to inclusion and integration between different generations, cultures and backgrounds, there was no single winner: all participants and, above all, the themes that inspire the event were rewarded. Before the games begin, each team gave voice to their chosen right with a short speech shared at the microphone in the center of the field.

Background

The project involved a group of young Italian women of Bengali origin. It was defined together with these young ambassadors, who showed a strong interest in art and writing, seen both as self-determination and empowerment and as a tool for awareness and change.
An association experienced in screen printing was involved, with which two different works were produced: one more intimate about feeling at home, and one more political about women’s rights and combating all forms of violence.

What Happened

“We must always listen but cannot respond.
Desire to have a voice.
Women’s work is being in the kitchen.
Desire to work, to create, to earn.
Period is a taboo, period is a disease.
Desire to live my body
Without it being judged.
Good girls come home before sunset.
Desire to see the moon and stars.”

Through screen print work, young girls Shining L.E.A.D.E.R.s put their desires on paper in response to prejudice and social control by families and communities. Inside is a manifesto claiming their rights and freedom to choose. The manifesto will be disseminated during initiatives and posted in the neighborhood.
